Holidays in Puerto del Carmen
Great Article and with this cold weather a “Must Go To” -> With over forty years already under its belt as the most popular destination on Lanzarote, Puerto del Carmen is undergoing a facelift at present. Designed to update the resort’s infrastructure, it is also adding new facilities, such as an eighteen hole golf course to its amenities. The modernization of the harbour will allow the new marina to compete with neighboring marinas at Puerto Calero and Marina Rubicon, attracting ever greater numbers of sailors to the island.
Within the town itself, the main seafront renovations are almost finished, with wider pedestrian areas and single lane traffic maximising the enjoyment visitors can take from its beautiful beaches. Visually, the avenue will benefit from streamlined shop fronts, presenting a more harmonious whole and bringing the public areas of the resort in line with some of the excellent accommodation already on offer.
Thanks to its long pedigree as a holiday destination, there are plenty of well appointed Lanzarote villas for holiday rental, especially in the Los Mojones enclave, which overlooks the old town. The vast majority of which boast private pools and secluded spots for sunbathing. Elsewhere in the resort, plenty of apartment complexes can be found, offering a good standard of self-catering accommodation close to the main facilities of the town.
Puerto del Carmen’s enduring popularity must in part be due to its lovely beaches. The main one of which is Playa Grande – a stretch of golden sand that shelves gently into the sea, making it ideal for paddling. Playa Grande also has sun beds, shades, toilets, beach side cafés and lifeguards. On either side, smaller coves and bays, also covered in sand, can be found.
And for those who don’t care much for beach holidays, Lanzarote is packed with alternatives. Sports fanatics will find that just about every activity they could wish for is available, including kite-surfing, kayaking and sport fishing. Whilst culture vultures will be pleased to find that there are several island attractions worth visiting, such as the César Manrique Foundation and the Castillo Santa Barbara.
Gastronomically, Puerto del Carmen has no lack of restaurants. The best to head for are those that specialise in fresh fish, such as the restaurants situated round the old harbour. Whilst the Japanese restaurant Teppanyaki is also very good as is its near neighbour, La Bodega.
Reaching the resort is very easy, as the airport is only a ten minute drive away. Although there is no bus service between resort and airport, this hardly matters, as taxi fares are not expensive for such a short journey. And car hire in Lanzarote is reasonable, with several rental concessions based in the arrivals hall of the airport. For those who have hired a car, the resort is easy to find, as once you have left the airport, taking the Yaiza exit, it is only another hundred metres on the motorway before the Puerto del Carmen turning.
