Five Reasons To Visit Lanzarote
Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands, is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Spain. Last year alone the Fire Island (as it is known thanks to its volcanic terrain) attracted just over 1.5 million foreign tourists. So what keeps visitors returning to Lanzarote year after year?
Weather & Climate
The ultimate key to Lanzarote´s popularity lies in its weather. As the island is located just 80 miles away from the Sahara and the west coast of Africa. Close to the Tropic of Capricorn.
As a result, temperatures on Lanzarote never get much lower than 20 Celsius, even during the winter months. Making the island one of Europe´s only genuine winter sun destinations. Whilst during the summer, the island is cooled by the Trade Winds. Making it a much fresher alternative to the cauldron of mainland Spain – and attracting thousands of visitors from the Iberian Peninsula as a result. Indeed the weather in Lanzarote is in fact most often likened to that of an eternal Spring.
High Quality Accommodation
As you´d expect from a destination that has been welcoming tourists for well over forty years there’s no shortage of good quality accommodation on the island.
The best hotels in Lanzarote can be found in Playa Blanca, which is the islands newest resort located at the southern tip. There’s also a wide selection of privately owned Lanzarote villas available for rent in all locations across the island.
Unspoilt Scenery
Despite it´s popularity as a holiday destination Lanzarote is in fact largely unspoiled. The three main tourist resorts are all well contained. And there are no high rise buildings or advertising hoardings scarring the landscape.
This is all down to Cesar Manrique, a son of Lanzarote who fought to ensure for the controlled development of tourism on the island. As a result of his efforts Lanzarote escaped the concrete burial that befell many other Spanish sun spots and instead was the first island in the world to be declared a UNESCO protected biosphere back in 1994.
Volcanic Vistas
Lanzarote´s main claim to fame is that the island endured a six year long volcanic eruption in the 1730´s. This carpeted large swathes of the island
In lava. Creating a very unusual and jagged terrain that has ironically become one of Lanzarote´s major attractions. The Timanfaya Volcano Park for example draws in close to one million visitors every year and is one of the busiest national parks in all of Spain.
Breathtaking Beaches
Lanzarote boasts over 90 great beaches – virtually all of them comprised of golden sand. Although many first time visitors expect to encounter black sand beaches. Famara in the north of the island and Papagayo in the south vie for the title of best beach on the island. But in truth both are amongst the most beautiful in the Canaries, if not Spain.
